Donald Smith, Chairman has spent the majority of his career as an Avionics Engineer in the Royal Air Force, specialising in engineering operations control and management. Since leaving the RAF he has completed a MBA, specialising in Business Angels and their investment decision making process. He has now published his first paper on this topic and presented these findings to the world's foremost academic conference on Entrepreneurship Research. He is now researching Exit Strategies on Business Angel Investing. Donald is also a Member of the Development Board for the Saltire Foundation, whose objective is to find, fuel and spark Scotland's human potential, in turn creating our next generation of business leaders.
Dr Roderick Bowers
Roderick Bowers, Science and business development director, is a veteran in the contact lens industry with over thirty years’ experience working with both multinational and start-ups in the biotech sector, in both the UK and the US. He was responsible for founding the Eyecare Division at Biocompatibles and the development and commercialisation of the Proclear product family, the business which was thence acquired by Coopervision for $100 Million Dollars. He has a number of key patents in the area of biomimetic materials for contact lenses and medical devices.
James H. Barton, Commercial Director, is a veteran of the contact lens industry, having spent twenty-two years as an executive at Bausch & Lomb Incorporated, where he served variously as Vice President of Business Development, overseeing all aspects of technology acquisition and managing numerous licensing deals; Vice President of Strategy and Commercial Development for Contact Lens, responsible for global product development, commercial launches, branding/pricing, and portfolio life-cycle management; and as leader of large marketing and sales organizations in both Japan and China. He is owner of James H. Barton Consulting, LLC and advises clients on biomedical technology commercialization.
Scott Carnegie, Finance director, has over 25 years experience of advising on Fundraising and Business Restructuring for Small & Medium Sized Enterprises. During that time, he has also held several Executive Director roles with client companies giving him hands on experience in running businesses in several market sectors. He continues to sit on many Boards in both Executive and Non Executive capacities. In 2006, he founded, and is Chairman of Discovery Investment Fund- an angel group, which focuses on start-up and early stage investments. In 2013 he founded and is chairman of London Scottish Investment Partners, an angel group which focuses on helping later stage companies to grow and exit at value.
Gordon Honeyman, Senior polymer chemist and Project Manager, graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a PhD in Organometallic and Polymer Chemistry. Gordon has worked for over 10 years in the design and synthesis of PEG based polyurethanes for medical device applications. The initial period, with Controlled Therapeutics involved the design and synthesis of controlled release drug delivery systems. Gordon joined the team at Ocutec in 2012 and during those 6 years he has focused on PEG based contact lens technology, designing and developing material formulations for both our PEG and silicone-PEG based contact lenses.
Quality and Regulatory Manager Michelle Kerr, having achieved an honors degree in Biotechnology, enjoyed a year with Smith Klein Beacham as an analytical chemist, in a role which spanned many strands of the business. Working for many years at BioReliance, a leading Contract Research Organisation, Michelle enjoyed a trouble shooting role which took her right across the country as a Quality Specialist. Moving to Q.C.M.D. Michelle expanded her experience in Quality Management to the Medical Devices industry. Ocutec has been fortunate in recently welcoming her to the team.
Lynsey McDade, Quality Assurance technician, began her career at Day Soft working there as a Senior Team Leader for 6 years. She has now been working with us 10 years. Lynsey is all about the detail, inspection of all our lenses, inspection of data, monitoring the environment, our policies on safety and all our production procedures. A very experienced member of our research and development team, she ensures that our lenses are of the highest standard.
Lynn Bowers, marketing manager, joined us having spent years in the design industry. Lynn has dealt with major clients including L’Oreal and 3M before a period in publishing. During that time she worked with Scientists at Cambridge, Imperial and Kings college to bring their work to a wider public. Lynn has been associated with the Contact Lens industry for many years in the US and the UK. Having worked for Ocutec freelance she came on board in 2017.
Lesley Hill, Office manager, began her career in the care sector. Lesley began her association with Ocutec during her degree course at the University of the West of Scotland. Having achieved her degree in Accounting, Lesley joined the team full time two years ago as Office manager, with responsibility for Accounting and finance.
Lesley is at the heart of the business and during her 5 years with us she has helped out in any and all ways within it, affording her invaluable insight into every part of the company’s progress.
