PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) based materials have been safely used in many biomedical applications. This is because they are non toxic and strongly biomimetic. The reason this material is so biomimetic is its affinity for water . PEG’s strongly bind water molecules and as such they are seen by the body as water and are therefore highly biocompatible materials. These materials have several known properties which make them highly advantageous for use as contact lens materials. The diagram below shows these properties and the features and benefits that follow on from them. The boxes shaded in darker blue show where Ocutec has successfully proven the feature/benefit. Over the next year Ocutec intends to complete all its product improvements and testing in order to prove all the features and benefits.
